Dealing with Weird Spreadsheets from Weird Acct. Systems

Occasionally you'll hit upon accounting statements generated from accounting systems that we've never heard of. They might be super-ugly, have weird formatting or layout, and so on. More than likely they will not be in the simple monthly format that we're looking for, either.

These cases can be a little tricky, but usually rather than pull your hair out trying to tweak their data into a manageable format, you can instead ask if their system is capable of exporting something that is a little closer to what we're looking for:

Thank you for your email, I am happy to assist.

I've had a look at your spreadsheets, and I can see a few areas that are causing some disagreement with our software. To clarify -- CFO Scoreboard has a very flexible importer, but it does have certain expectations and conventions that are needed within your file. Have you had a look at our General Requirements article? In there you'll find an overview of what we're looking for.

But in brief, here is the general idea:
An income statement and a balance sheet with monthly data.
Account listed down the left side.
Month and Year headings listed across the top of each column.
The range of months needs to be consecutive (e.g. Mar 2018 | Apr 2018 | May 2018)
The range of months needs to be the same when you compare the income statement and the balance sheet.

I hope all that helps! My suggestion would be to look into your accounting system and see if there are any other formats that you can run, that will perhaps produce results more in line with what I've described above.

We also have an article below with a template you can download and use.

If there's anything I can assist you with please let me know.

Feel free to tweak, trim, and embellish as appropriate.
